Professor Maria Daniella Marouda specialises in International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, European Humanitarian Action, and humanitarian crisis management.
She is Chair of the Bureau of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) of the Council of Europe and Head of the Humanitarian Action Unit of EKEKDAA. She teaches courses related to International Humanitarian Law, European institutions, human rights, migration, and European humanitarian governance.
She has extensive experience in the humanitarian field, having collaborated with international organisations such as the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), including participation in missions in areas affected by armed conflicts and humanitarian crises.
She also has significant experience in training professionals, volunteers, and organisations on humanitarian action, population protection, and disaster preparedness. Her contribution to the Jean Monnet Chair focuses on connecting European policies, human rights, and humanitarian response.
Scientific Associate, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)
Evika Karamagioli works in the fields of humanitarian crisis management, crisis communication, and the use of technology in humanitarian action.
She was Honorary Visiting Assistant Professor in Humanitarian Crisis Management, Communication and Technology at the Medical School of the University of Bern, Switzerland (2020-2023). She is also Scientific Associate of the MSc Programme “Global Health – Disaster Medicine” at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Her interdisciplinary expertise connects humanitarian crisis management with communication, digital media, and emerging technologies. She also teaches in the MSc Programme “Digital Communication, Media and Interaction Environments” at the Department of Communication and Media Studies of NKUA.
Her contribution to the Jean Monnet Chair focuses on the development of contemporary approaches to communication in humanitarian crises, digital support for humanitarian response, and strengthening societal preparedness and resilience in the face of crises and disasters.
Professor of Public Health
Professor Özge Karadağ is an expert in Public Health, Global Health, vulnerable populations’ health, and health management in contexts of crises, conflicts, and forced displacement.
She is Professor of Public Health at the School of Medicine of BAU Istanbul University. She previously worked for many years as a researcher and faculty member at Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Medicine and Institute of Public Health, making significant contributions to research and education in global health.
She has conducted research collaborations at Lund University, Sweden, and the Earth Institute of Columbia University, and served as Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Sustainable Development of Columbia University’s Climate School (2019–2023). She was also a member of Columbia University’s Committee on Forced Migration.
She has more than 15 years of experience as a consultant for international organisations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNFPA, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNDP, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the European Commission, as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations.
She contributed to the The Lancet COVID-19 Commission (2020–2022) and the Global Happiness Council (2020–2022), where she chaired the Vulnerable Populations Thematic Group. She currently co-chairs the CHH–Lancet Commission on Health, Conflict, and Forced Displacement and is a member of the Lancet Migration Euro Hub Task Force.
Social Scientist – Scientific Associate, NKUA
Eleni-Panagiota Stoupa is a social scientist with an interdisciplinary background in political science, social anthropology, and humanities-based approaches to health.
She is Scientific Associate of the MSc Programme “Global Health – Disaster Medicine” at the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Research Associate at the Centre for Mediterranean, Middle East & Islamic Studies of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of the Peloponnese.
Her research interests focus on health anthropology, policy analysis, the social dimensions of health, community resilience, and peace-building processes in the Middle East.
Her contribution to the Jean Monnet Chair focuses on exploring the relationship between health, social determinants, humanitarian crises, and peace-building processes, highlighting the role of social sciences in understanding and addressing complex humanitarian challenges.
Fulbright Schuman Scholar – Researcher in Global Health and Migration
Maryam Khalil is a Fulbright Schuman Scholar whose research focuses on healthcare delivery for people on the move and European migration policies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Migration and Asylum Hub of LUISS Guido Carli University.
She has experience in global health, refugee advocacy, trauma-informed research, and humanitarian healthcare delivery. She has worked in frontline healthcare settings, including the Victoria Community Center in Athens, as well as in street medicine programmes in the United States.
Her clinical and humanitarian experience, ranging from conflict-affected areas in Libya to refugee accommodation settings in Greece, has shaped her research on health diplomacy as a tool for peacebuilding and social cohesion.
She has contributed to policy reports on trauma, asylum, and human rights, collaborated with organisations such as Pull for Progress and the Stanford Human Rights in Trauma Mental Health Program, and has taught courses related to human rights and social justice.
